For my third and final experiment, I will be attempt a photo essay. I will be focusing in on the stigmas surrounding mental illness. Many big budget Hollywood films use mental illness to scare people, as a selling point to make their movies more popular. In sensationalizing disorders like depression and schizophrenia, however, they are doing more harm than good.

I want to shed light on the inaccuracies in the media in this project. I will be taking pictures from movies, captioning them and writing down what illness are being portrayed. Then, when the viewer hovers over the picture with their mouse, I will have a quote that someone has said that showcases what major problems this movie had in depicting mental illness. The final project will be exhibited on a page of this ePortfolio, on its own tab. The idea of a photo essay struck me as a very effective way to show the inaccuracies in the media, and I really liked the idea of having quotes of people pointing out what's going wrong. I'm hoping that it will work as a kind of reality check that forces people to understand and see how these kinds of depictions are malicious and harmful.
